Kings Hammer Healthy Habits Episode 2

Kings Hammer is thrilled to bring you the second episode of Kings Hammer Healthy Habits presented by OrthoCincy. In this episode, OrthoCincy experts discuss the topic of injury prevention as it relates to athletes.

Q1: Can you explain the most common types of injuries that soccer players are prone to, and how these injuries can be prevented or minimized through physical therapy?

A: Some of the most common injuries we see in our clinics are strains and sprains (hamstring, quad, ankle), ACL tears, muscle imbalances and overuse injuries. The best way to prevent several of these injuries is implementing strength & flexibility programs. Doing this we focus on a variety of areas such as improving hip/groin flexibility, assess player biomechanics as well as possible shoe modifications or ankle/knee stability braces.

Q2: How do you assess the individual needs of soccer players when it comes to injury prevention? Are there specific assessments or tests you use?

A: We can assess individual needs through a variety of tests. These could include strength/endurance tests, balance/proprioception assessments, biomechanic assessments, history & symptom evaluation and more

Q3: Can you describe the importance of proper warm-up routines in soccer injury prevention? What dynamic stretching exercises do you recommend for soccer players?

A: Warm-up routines are essential as they prepare the body for the physical demands of the sport. They help increase blood flow, improve muscle elasticity, enhance joint lubrication as well as mental preparation. Dynamic stretching is a crucial component of a soccer warm-up as it involves controlled movements that actively stretch muscles and increase range of motion (leg swings, hip circles, high knees, butt kicks, lateral lunges, inchworms, ankle circles, quad & calf stretches) …

November Education: KH players get real about “Car Ride Conversations”

In October, we dove into our communications with our athletes by looking at our conversations during the car ride to, or from, their practices and games. We wanted to further explore this concept by catching up with some Kings Hammer players and discussing what the car ride looks like for them. Listen to what some of our players had to say and read the following article on Car Ride Conversations for more information.

Every Athlete is Different

Before diving into the Pre and Post conversations it is important to keep in mind that every athlete is different, even within the same family. Knowing your athlete is an important part of the communication process. Is your child self-motivated, focused, lazy, competitive, intimidated, aggressive? All of these will dictate how much of a pre-game pep talk they need or want. Some kids rise to the occasion every game or practice and don’t need a reminder to focus. Others need a gentle push. Still others will resist any suggestions parents give them on the way to a game. So, choose wisely.

Things you MAY want to talk about on the way to the game or practice

  • THEY LEAD – Let them guide the conversation, both content and timing
  • PLAYER’S VISION – get their view, or thoughts, on what they think will happen at the practice or game.  Ask them to name three ways they can support their team and teammates during the activity.
  • TALK ABOUT GOALS – As previously stated in prior newsletters, setting goals prior to games or practices can help players establish a focus.  Be sure that these are process-based and under the control of the athlete.  Goals, assists, saves, shutouts, and wins ARE NOT under the control of the athlete. Trying a new move, performing a tactic that the coach has worked on, effort, attitude, teamwork, etc. are process related and controllable…
