Welcome to the Kings Hammer Murfreesboro October Newsletter! This edition features the Sideline Behavior Project, Spring Recreational Registration Open, Chevy Test Drive, Continuing Education, Strikers Cup, KHM at NSC, On to State, Fan Wear, and more! Sideline Behavior Project

Setting a good example of how fans and parents should behave on the sidelines. Join us and Tennessee State Soccer Association this October in completing The Sideline Project behavior course. Don’t forget, there are prizes drawn each Friday for those who complete their registration. Click here to learn more.

Congrats to all who have won over the last month, we will have 1 more BIG drawing this Friday (October 27^th) for 4 Playoff tickets for when NSC takes on Orlando City!

Spring Recreational Registration Open

Registration is now open for the 2024 Spring Recreational Season! Little Strikers, TOPSoccer and the Youth Rec League registration is open now. The deadline to register is February 8th and a $50 late fee will begin on January 24th for the Youth Rec League. Click the links below for more information and to register:

Chevy Test Drive with KHM

Drop by the Kings Hammer Murfreesboro office on Thursday, November 2nd from 3-5pm to test drive the latest Chevy Model, courtesy of our friends at Chevrolet Buick GMC of Murfreesboro. Enjoy light refreshments and hang out with our Executive Director, Coach Turkish!

This fun and FREE event is a great opportunity to help support our club, with a donation coming back to the club from Chevy Buick GMC of Murfreesboro for each completed test drive. We can’t wait to see you there!

Continuing Education

Congratulations to Kings Hammer Murfreesboro coach, Nick Odette, on receiving his U.S. Soccer National D Coaching License. We’re proud of all the hard work you have put in, Nick. We know your team appreciates it too!

Strikers Cup

Kings Hammer Murfreesboro hosted our second annual Strikers Cup the weekend of October 13-15 at the Richard Siegel Soccer Complex. This year we hosted over 170 teams over the 3 day event with teams traveling from 7 different states. We were treated to some great weather (except for a little rain on Sunday!), great games, and very competitive championship matches.

Thank you to all participating teams, coaches, referees, volunteers and staff for making the event such a success! Without our Kings Hammer Murfreesboro families who volunteered many hours, we can’t host these great events! We will wrap up our 2022 Events with the Champions Showcase in December and then turn our attention to our two spring events in April and May.

We look forward to hosting 3 more great events for the 2023/2024 Season!

It is with sadness we share that Kings Hammer Murfreesboro Grassroots coach John Boatner passed away last week. John was a beloved father and coach that will be missed dearly.

KHM at NSC

Thanks Nashville Soccer Club and Chevy of Murfreesboro, We had a great time participating in walkouts. We can’t wait to do it again sometime soon!

October Education: Car Ride Conversations

In last month’s Club Newsletter, we talked about ways to help your child regain or build confidence. One of the suggested actions was communicating with them to provide a space for them to express their fears and doubts. This month we continue to focus on our communications with our athletes by looking at our conversations during the car ride to, or from, their practices and games.
*Please note – this article is intended to address normal pre and post activity situations. If a youth athlete exhibits unhealthy, unsafe, or aggressive behavior before, during, or after a game or practice it should be dealt with by the parent in a more direct and immediate fashion.

Every Athlete is Different

Before diving into the Pre and Post conversations it is important to keep in mind that every athlete is different, even within the same family. Knowing your athlete is an important part of the communication process. Is your child self-motivated, focused, lazy, competitive, intimidated, aggressive? All of these will dictate how much of a pre-game pep talk they need or want. Some kids rise to the occasion every game or practice and don’t need a reminder to focus. Others need a gentle push. Still others will resist any suggestions parents give them on the way to a game. So, choose wisely.

Things you MAY want to talk about on the way to the game or practice

THEY LEAD – Let them guide the conversation, both content and timing
PLAYER’S VISION – get their view, or thoughts, on what they think will happen at the practice or game. Ask them to name three ways they can support their team and teammates during the activity.
TALK ABOUT GOALS – As previously stated in prior newsletters, setting goals prior to games or practices can help players establish a focus. Be sure that these are process-based and under the control of the athlete. Goals, assists, saves, shutouts, and wins ARE NOT under the control of the athlete. Trying a new move, performing a tactic that the coach has worked on, effort, attitude, teamwork, etc. are process related and controllable.
POSITIVE MESSAGES – stay away from coaching them but provide supportive messages that reinforce
- It is OK to be nervous, use that ENERGY
- Express yourself-in talk and in action
- Take risks and challenge yourself
- Mistakes are going to happen, it will be OK
- Listen to your coach
